Sarasota University’s 2025 Commencement Ceremony was a momentous occasion filled with joy, gratitude, and inspiration. Families, faculty, and guests gathered on September 6 to celebrate the largest graduating class in university history, marking a true milestone for the institution and the Montessori community it serves. In addition to celebrating our graduates, the day featured special announcements that uplifted our community and shared a look into the future ahead.
“Our recent graduation was the largest in university history. As SU continues to grow, we remain honored to serve the Montessori community,” shared University President Dr. Michael Levens, reflecting on the significance of the event.
The ceremony recognized the very first group of students to complete their Bachelor of Science in Montessori Education, alongside graduates who earned their Master of Arts in Montessori Leadership. Each student’s achievement carried forward Maria Montessori’s vision of education as a pathway to peace. These graduates now join a growing network of educators committed to shaping the future with wisdom, compassion, and purpose.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Education upon Jonathan Wolff, a Montessori consultant, leadership coach, teacher educator, and author whose career spans more than 50 years. From his early work with at-risk youth in Philadelphia to his global leadership development practice, Wolff has influenced and contributed to countless educators and organizations with his vision, humorous and inspiring teaching style, and deep commitment to Montessori ideals.
The celebration also included the launch of the Dr. Michael Dorer Doctoral Scholarship, established in memory of one of Sarasota University’s founding figures and a pioneer in Montessori education. Dr. Dorer’s legacy lives on through this fund, which supports future educators and honors his passion for compassion, innovation, and lifelong learning.
Reflecting on the day, University Provost Dr. Lindsey Pollock shared: “Our recent Sarasota University Commencement Ceremony was a truly exciting celebration of honored guests, graduates and special recognitions! We recognized the very first group of students who have completed their Bachelor of Science in Montessori Education as well as our group who completed their Master of Arts in Montessori Leadership. Additionally, the launch of the Dr. Michael Dorer Doctoral Scholarship was a tribute to one of the founders of our Doctoral Program—our first cohort started July this year. We also recognized the tremendous contributions of Jonathan Wolff to our global Montessori community by bestowing an honorary doctorate! Sarasota University is truly a place BY Montessorians FOR Montessorians!”
In summary, this graduation was a celebration that points us toward the future and reflects Sarasota University’s vision and ongoing purpose. It renews our commitment to building pathways for future students, welcoming more learners into our programs, and expanding the reach of Montessori education worldwide. With every commencement, our mission comes to life in the faces of our graduates, and we look forward to the impact they, and those who follow in their footsteps, will make in the years ahead.
